COMPARISON

Which tile hunting app?

Every tile hunting app uses the same idea: the world is cut into ~1-mile squares (zoom-14 tiles) and a GPS ride through a square collects it. They differ in what they do with the squares afterwards — analytics, planning, mobile apps, or, in Veloturf's case, a fight over them.

Here are the four most used, side by side. All of them read from Strava, so you can run more than one at once.

WHO SHOULD USE WHICH

Squadrats

Fastest interface, a mobile app, a route-planning browser extension and one-click history sync. The easiest place to start collecting, and free.

VeloViewer

The original and the deepest: Explorer tiles plus a full analytics suite. Paid tier for the tile features; worth it if you want the numbers.

Statshunters

The free all-rounder — tiles, heatmaps, achievements and stats in one place. The map can be slower, but nothing is behind a paywall.

Veloturf

The only one built for fighting friends. Same tiles, but held, stolen and reset monthly, 1-on-1 or as a club. Free. Pair it with any of the three above for lifetime stats.

Common questions

What is an explorer tile?

A square of a global grid at map zoom level 14, roughly a mile on each side. VeloViewer coined the name; Squadrats calls the same square a Squadrat.

Do these apps share the same grid?

Yes. All four use zoom-14 tiles, so a square you collect in one is the same square in the others.

Which tile hunting apps are free?

Squadrats, Statshunters and Veloturf are free. VeloViewer has a free tier, but its Explorer tile features need the paid PRO subscription.

Bring your friends. Free.
